Determination of UV curable coating (resin) VOC

The standard method for the determination of volatile organic compound (VOC) content in UV curable coating (resin) has not been established in China, so the standard of American Society for Testing and Materials ASTMD 5403-93 is used.

According to the limit of VOC content in the coating sample, this method is classified into method A (VOC≤3%) and method B (VOC>3%).

1. Specific steps of method A (VOC <3%)

(1) Weigh about 0.2 sample and coat it to an aluminum base with known mass, and then re-weight it and record the result as value B;

(2) Cure the test samples with UV or EB;

(3) Cool the cured samples for 15 minutes under the room temperature, and then re-measure it, and record the result as value C;

(4) Place the cured and cooled sample in the ventilated oven of (110±) 5 for 1h;

(5) Store the sample in the desiccators, weigh it after it is cooled to the room temperature, and record the result as value D;

Calculate VOC with the following formula:

Processing volatile matter (%)=100×[(B-C)/(B-A)]

Potential volatile matter (%)=100×[(C-D)/(B-A)]

Total volatile matter (%)=processing volatile matter (%)+ potential volatile matter (%)

Where: A=mass of aluminum base, g; B= mass of sample and aluminum base, g; C= mass of UV cured sample and aluminum base g; D= mass of heated cured sample and aluminum base, g;

2. Specific test method of method B (VOC ≥3%)

(1) Weigh about 0.3g sample with an injector to an aluminum plate with (3±1)ml acetone, rotate the aluminum plate slowly to fully diffuse the sample;

(2) Place the sample in the ventilated oven of (50±2) for heating for 30 minutes;

(3) Cure the test samples with UV or EB;

(4) Cool the cured samples for 5 minutes under the room temperature, and then re-measure it, and record the result as value C;

(5) Place the cured and cooled sample in the ventilated oven of (110±) 5 for 1h;

(6) Store the sample in the desiccators, weigh it after it is cooled to the room temperature, and record the result as value D;

Calculate VOC with the following formula:

Processing volatile matter (%)=100×[B-(C-A)/B

Potential volatile matter (%)=100×[(C-D)/B]

Total volatile matter (%)=processing volatile matter (%)+ potential volatile matter (%)

Where: A=mass of aluminum plate, g; B= mass of sample, g; C= mass of sample and aluminum plate after preheated UV curing of sample g; D= mass of sample and aluminum plate after final preheated curing, g;
